Lake Life Unplugged: A Family Day in Kingsland, Texas
It’s Nice to be in Kingsland, Texas.
Simple words to describe the vibe of Kingsland, but it says it all about this small Texas town. Located along the banks of Lake LBJ that attracts thousands to the area every summer, there is so much more to experience beyond our water attraction. Kingsland is sixty-six miles northwest of Austin and just down the road from Marble Falls. The terrain consists of gently rolling peaks and valleys made up of limestone, sandstone and granite formations and outcroppings adorned with majestic oak, pecan, juniper and mesquite trees.
A visit to Kingsland can be as peaceful as you want or full of nonstop fun for a family day in the Highland Lakes area. The town was put on the map in 1892 when the Austin and Northwestern Railroad connected to Llano through the town. Visitors call Kingsland “quirky” or “charming” or “laid-back”—all are true—but after watching the majestic sunset over Lake LBJ, you will remember Kingsland as “magical.”
So, what is there to do in Kingsland and surrounding area when traveling with your family? There is no better view of Lake LBJ than from one of the cabins at Lake LBJ Inn | Kingsland, Texas, Valentine Lakeside or Log Country Cove, offering you a range of nightly rates to accommodate your budget. Start your morning with a blueberry muffin or “Cozy Pig” with freshly brewed coffee or hot chocolate at the Lazy Heron.
If you prefer drive-through options before a day of sightseeing, check out The Thirsty Armadillo serving coffee, juice drinks and snacks from a tiny home. Right down the street is their sister business, AW Taco for the best handmade breakfast tacos around!
Now nourished, we recommend you visit these local attractions for maximum photo shots and Instagram posts. Lookout Mountain in Burnet County side of Kingsland offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake LBJ. Wakepoint’s “The Spot” has cool murals, one from “Dazed and Confused” at which to capture a family photo with Matthew McConaughey. More Instagram fun while you “ride the wave” in front of the mural at the Kingsland Chamber & Visitor Center. They have maps and more great information on what to see and do in the area.
Nature lovers appreciate the trails and impressive caves found at Inks Lake Park and Longhorn Cavern. Much more history and family attractions await in Burnet and Llano Counties.
When hunger strikes again, dining at the historic (oops, did I mean “horrific”?) Hooper’s restaurant is a must-do. Don’t let Tobe Hooper’s 1974 “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” memorabilia, scattered around the restored farmhouse used in the filming, scare you—the menu is to die for! As your day comes to a close, find the perfect lake view table for delicious pizza, live music and watching that breathtaking sunset disappear into the lake horizon. Check out Boat Town/2900 Pizza for the perfect way to wrap up your Kingsland day.
